FESTIVAL INFORMATION – 2025
MAKE A SCARECROW FOR YOUR YARD THIS HALLOWEEN
Individual families, children, groups of friends, school and church groups, scout troops, and business owners —all are invited to build a scarecrow to display in their yards during October.
Ideas for scarecrows – There are hundreds of photos of great scarecrow ideas on the internet. Just Google "scarecrow festival images” or “scarecrow contest images."
CATEGORIES TO ENTER
Traditional Scarecrow: Pay homage to the scarecrows that have been “scaring crows” from the farmers’ f ields and gardens for centuries. You may add parts that move or make noise when the wind gusts – either way, your scarecrow has its work cut out for it with the crows here in the Village!
Quite the Character: Open the possibilities as you create an interpretation of your favorite book, television, sports, historical, or movie character!
Once Upon a Time: Inspired by your favorite whimsical character from a fairytale, fantasy book, or movie, this category will surely provide some exciting portrayals of your favorite fairytale hero or villain!
Extraordinary / Contemporary: Think out of the box – not necessarily a “scarecrow” – more like a cutting-edge creation of your very own. You are only limited by your imagination.
Funny Bones: Make us laugh with your wit and creativity by crafting a scarecrow that may be a play on words or is comical in its design. The crows may laugh more than they are scared by your creation, but your neighbors will appreciate your design that tickles their funny bone!
Overall Experience: Scarecrows, pumpkins, Halloween décor galore – this category is for the full immersion experience. Be sure to note if judging is better during the day or at night – especially for this category!
Group Scarecrow: Make your scarecrow a group project with your school, church, club, scout troop, or group of friends. Put on your collective creative thinking caps to conjure up a winner! Great project for families and groups!
KIDS ONLY!: Kids 12 and under can enter and should build the majority of the scarecrow themselves in this category, allowing them to compete with their peers and celebrate the power of their young minds and creativity!
RIBBONS
The most outstanding Scarecrows in each category will receive a ribbon, be displayed at the
HACKBERRY CREEK HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL.
HACKBERRY CREEK ANNUAL SCARECROW FESTIVAL RULES
1. Please complete the Official Scarecrow Festival Entry form ONLINE below by October 19, 2025. Include a short, written description and title for your entry. All entries must be family-friendly; please consider our youngest neighbors in your design, as we do not want to frighten them during this fun fall event. Hackberry Creek Homeowners Association reserves the right to refuse any scarecrow entry that we feel may be offensive to residents or visitors. Families or groups of neighbors can join together to build a scarecrow.
2. Scarecrows should be built on the 2-inch square wooden post supplied at your own expense. Feel free to paint or cut the wooden post. The HOA will also provide a square metal pipe fixture to be secured in the ground at your display location for you to insert your post. Only one metal pipe fixture per entry is supplied. Metal pipe fixtures must be returned to the Homeowners Association office at the end of the festival. A $25.00 fee will be charged for any pipe fixtures not returned.
3. After registration, you MUST come to the office to pick up your number and yellow Festival Entry form.
4. If you need a post, please stop by the office to sign one out when you pick up your numbered yellow Festival Entry Form.
5. IMPORTANT: Your scarecrow MUST BE WEATHER-RESISTANT & STURDY in order to qualify for displaying and judging. Consider the wind and rain when choosing and securing materials for your creation. During the time your entry is on display, you may make any necessary repairs to keep your scarecrow looking its very best. Participants should remove any scarecrows that do not hold up to the weather.
6. The Hackberry Creek Homeowners Association is NOT RESPONSIBLE for scarecrows on display.
7. Your scarecrow should be displayed in your yard beginning September 27th but no later than October 19th. Scarecrows will be on display through November 8, 2025.
8. Judges will select the most outstanding scarecrows in each category from October 21st through October 24th.
9. Scarecrows should be retired until next year on November 8th, 2025.
10. Each individual, family or group may enter only one scarecrow per category but may enter more than one category. One scarecrow per entry form.
